Andy Krehm

Andy Krehm, the mastering engineer who mastered all of our music, passed away in November.

When Rob and Schuyler did their first recordings together in Brantford, Ontario, Randy Solski of RS Sounds recommended Andy and the work was so good we never used anybody else. Schuyler continued on with him through other recording projects as well. It was a 25 year relationship with a real professional.

He gave Schuyler this CD after a session one day:

I think it was the only recording he made under his name, and it was even pressed to wax. (Obviously – it was recorded in 1979.) Used copies of the LP would turn up at record stores around Toronto.

Silverbirch Productions, Andy’s company and where he did all of his work, was nestled between Queens Quay and Bishop Desmond Tutu boulevard in Toronto, in an artist co-op that Andy’s wife started. A big apartment building right by the water full of artists and creatives. I think they had like a 3-year waiting list and I believe there was rent subsidy from the province so the creatives could afford to be creative. The whole thing was an exceedingly impressive feat.

He taught us that “volume is a drug” and to listen on a few different types of monitors. He also didn’t like when Rob tapped his bass, ‘cuz then he’d have to “manufacture low end,” haha. His favourite song was The Eternal Return.

Thanks, Andy.
